    “Now we are one”
  • I lied, we didn’t do jackshit the night that I wrote last. I felt really weak and dehydrated and needed a break and to get some good sleep for a couple nights. So, two nights ago was the night we got back to it. I kept changing my mind about how to shoot the scene even though I had made the conscious effort to at least sketch out exactly what we were gonna do so we could bang it out when we reconvened. I was having trouble acting as dramatically as I needed to without disturbing my roommate sleeping in the room adjoining the bathroom set. (It’s an old brittle house that makes a lot of noise when pressed.) So, I thought for a while and decided it would be best to shoot it in a way that has the editing carry the performance, action, and credibility. I have no idea really what it will end up looking like; there are so many possibilities for how to arrange the montage. Editing a whole short movie is gonna be a bitch. We’re gonna have to record sound after we finish photography too. I’m gonna do my best to avoid the need for reshoots. I actually need to reshoot a scene we shot earlier. I found a way to save money by returning a prop I used because I found the real deal laying around—a dead cockroach. Beside that, we finished the last three shots of Part I. Onto the big room! We’re gonna have so much more freedom in there, and the best part, it’s cold in there! We have walkie talkies too now that reach from my co-producer’s room to mine, so we’re a legit operation now. On Saturday afternoon, we are dedicating the afternoon, at the very least, to getting started on Part II production. Before then, I have some planning to do, which is gonna be interesting because I find myself more and more busy and just discovered that the Wi-Fi network I used to be connected to inexplicably has disappeared, so why the fuck am I paying almost $800 a month for no AC and no internet? June is the my second-to-last month here, then what? Shit.

And it told me to come see you.
I had seen it once before,
    Except I never told you.

  • It’s been a week to the day that we’ve been working on Dark Chamber, and tonight we’ll finish part one of three; therefore, we can finally escape the swamp ass by candlelight of my bedroom. Last night was the worst in terms of the heat and exhaustion, I would say. I had only two shots scheduled, but my god, the second was the hardest to pull off yet. Forget the intense choreography of camera and actor from Tuesday night (see “Production Note #2“), the amount of work I had to do just to be able to even begin shooting was maddening, and my brain was not at peak problem solving capability (I blame humidity that adds 10 degrees and McDonald’s for dinner). I wanted the camera to swivel, but how the fuck do you do that when both actors have to be onscreen? (I realized after the fact that I probably didn’t even need to be in the shot because it was so dark, so no one would know the difference, but alas. Even then, I much prefer the inhuman quality of the pan inspired by the ending of Coppola’s The Conversation or a one-off gag shot from the Wayans-produced A Haunted House. I needed the camera to reflect being a camera, but not necessarily within the diegesis. So, I took maybe an hour or so to rig a contraption that would swing the hefty camcorder in a semi-circular motion. All it took was an ironing board, an oscillating desk fan, two shoelaces, four books, and a CD player as a counterweight, so the whole operation didn’t crash on the floor after a few rotations. I think because there was so little to shoot that we were dragging our feet and giving in to the heat exhaustion, but we pulled through. The execution was minimal, but the prep was a drag. Plus, we accidentally found ourselves embarking on an entirely new artistic project that I can only loosely describe as internet performance art that’s quite brilliant in its simplicity, which we’ll get into tonight as well. We’re slowly building out a web of interconnected efforts that will form some sort of DIY, choose-your-own-adventure, decentralized (anti)narrative (anti)collective of sorts.

  • After a night off, we’re back! We completed probably the most difficult shot to pull off tonight, and maybe the last really technical aspect with the camera. From here on, it’s mostly performance-based challenges. Although, next time (later tonight), we do have to figure out how to get the camera to swivel; if not, I do have an easier backup idea. Part one of three is coming close to a close. Part two is where we really get to go crazy because I have planned the cinematography in a way that leaves the space largely open and uncircumcised, so we get to go crazy and have fun with it.

I wish I would’ve documented it before I took them down, but we had to diffuse my bathroom lighting with posters (Drive; Jackass Forever, The Grand Canal Near the Rialto Bridge, Venice), because my skin was too white and blown out on camera. I don’t know if I’ll be able to truly enjoy my own creation because in the back of my mind, I’ll be seeing all the shit hidden just offscreen. It’ll be a different appreciation, but I’ve never watched a (loosely) narrative project as anything other than pure spectator. I’ve known how the sausage is made, but I’ve never made it myself.

There’s only four minutes left on the tape we’ve been shooting on. These last two nights we’ve worked (Sunday and now Tuesday night) have filled it up pretty fast. I didn’t think to overwrite the takes that we decided as absolutely no good. Honestly, I didn’t really know how exactly, but I got it figured out now. I still have another unopened blank tape, fresh in its 2001 packaging, and we can always offload and convert the footage that’s already been shot. We went til almost three in the morning and my gums were in agony from brushing my teeth so many times. It was worth all the pain and annoyance and fatigue.

I’ve been flirting with the hypothetical thought that maybe I would be content with just being a writer if I had a good enough thing going on with that, but now I definitely want to stay on the path of trying everything. Never settle down. Make movies, write criticism, shit, learn an instrument again, try to make my own clothes, live in a van, work construction, move to Europe, present a paper at a conference (a professor told me I had an essay that could certainly be worthy of such distinction). It’s gonna be a hustle certainly, but I think I’m cut out for it; I’m only getting better. We’ll see how my luck fares, I’m still half-expecting that feeling that everything always works out to run out. No matter.

  • Shooting a Wilder film like an Ulmer film. A dreamy Classical Hollywood feature immortalized for its iconic scene between two iconic actors with one of the most iconic songs of all time, but it’s shot like a Poverty Row picture. So, who is the real winner, so to speak? The low-budget, the DIY, the underground (not that Poverty Row was even the underground, those studios were still commercial and an important part of the Hollywood Golden Age).

I think young people forget how much a counterculture needs an overculture. Counterculture isn’t utopia, it’s antagonism that burns and fades, subsumed until it’s a husk. Or maybe we have no desire for a counterculture, maybe the culture of vibes and pick-and-choose aestheticism is the only liberation we’re gonna see in our lifetimes. We can all be punks or goths or lesbian fairies who live in little houses or whatever it is that alternative signifies now. But, I can’t help feeling there’s gotta be a better way. This geist without the zeit, this zeit without a geist. Reanimated ghosts of the last century’s greatest hits, reheated twice, thrice over for your instantaneous pleasure—hot and ready. The better way is not an exit, it is more a matter of taking what we’re stuck with and making it work better for the moment.

And so, it is the job of the critic, the academic, the intellectual, to elevate the mediocre and exalt the masterpiece. That is precisely why the best critic is a contrarian, not a dickrider. It takes a mind attuned toward, abused into, kneejerk skepticism and opposition to find the worthiest works in the wasteland. Not only is it better scholarship, but it is simply more interesting.

The underground harbors the formal creativity borne out of necessity, that is, industrial austerity and pop neglect. But, the impact or cultural relevance of such B pictures has been revived and brought back into the discussion because of the digital. The Internet made an underground impossible, it scattered us all into little tribes. God’s punitive wrath at the Tower of Babel. Without YouTube, I would’ve never already watched Ulmer’s Detour twice, and without my Film Noir and the Western class’ online Canvas site, who knows if or when I would have been exposed to this film, if not for that weekly response paper that was not even mandatory.

What a fantastic finale to one of my favorite films. We ripped our shot straight from Detour, this film’s peculiar device for the odd—but overall, very noir—obsession with lingering on objects, commodities, stuff. So, once we learned that we could manual focus on the camera, it was a gamechanger. I would have loved to shoot it myself, but I was an object for the lens on this one. But my cameraman nailed it after several takes of trial and error and playback, achieving the fluid, graceful feel of the soaring camera-man cyborg. We kept riffing and adding elements and it ended up awesome. After that, we were getting pooped. The almost 3,000 calories of Publix fried chicken and Hawaiian rolls between us, in conjuction with the sticky 83+-degree inside temp, made us sluggish, but we kept going till almost one in the morning. I think this shot will really blow people away, I want people to say, “how did they do that?” We resume after work again.

  • Making a movie is hard. The world around doesn’t stop when the camera starts rolling. I still have to get enough sleep. I still have to go to work. My friend/collaborator has summer classes. My skin still acts up, closeup or not. I don’t get to tell Mr. DeMille when I’m ready, he’s waiting and ready to go already. But it’s going well. It’s exhausting, but I love it. Sweating our asses off in my room with no air conditioning while we’re surrounded by a dozen candles burning and a television going is worth the serendipitous magic moments when things go just right, perfect and unplanned.

Almost all of the art and posters that were on my wall were taken down, and I like the empty walls. It makes you think about space differently. My life really is a movie. My bedroom, the set. I think I’ll keep my room this way until my lease expires end of July. It’s a document of change and anti-inertia.

I wanna get this done around the end of June, and I just recently realized that a July 4th release would really nail home the points I’m trying to make with this movie. It would’ve been a whole lot easier if I hadn’t picked up those two extra shifts this week, because I’ll be even more exhausted. Maybe I can channel that frustration and fatigue into my performance. (I am a very serious person and actor 🧐)

No, but I am quite anxious about being in front of the camera. Not because I can’t control what goes on behind from there (I fully trust my creative partner and he’s taking it all seriously, but it’s still fun and loose, I fully trust and respect his input, judgment, and ability), but because I don’t know how I’ll act around another person, even if it is just one. I’m not much of a performer, but I know I could be. It’ll be an interesting test. Something to be proud of, that’ll help me going forward when we’re all done here. We resume shooting for night two of production after I get off work, and those will be the first moments where I am onscreen. We’ll see how much we get done, I have an idea of what I’d like us to accomplish and I think it’s certainly feasible if I don’t run out of steam physically or with my own image.

I can’t believe I’m actually making a movie. Finally. The two shots we got and the rest we planned yesterday really turned out great, so I’m excited for other people to watch it. It’d be cool to cut together some trailers as a sort of virtual audience test screening. There’s so much to do, but I think I gotta forget about the rest for right now and put my energy into this project. I won’t mind others’ reactions too much, as long as I impress myself. So far, so good.

  • I wish I could go see a therapist, or even more interestingly, for better or worse, a psychoanalyst. Sitting down with a licensed professional to talk about the glitchy, rhizomatic workings of my brain would certainly scratch my intellectual itch to deconstruct and read into everything. But, maybe that would not be a good thing. I would not want to be told what to think about what I think, having my mental intrusions and dreams traced onto some preexisting top-down schema, but to have new pathways of understanding grow in addition. I certainly overanalyze my emotions, however, I don’t think I do that as substitute for feeling them. The chicken or the egg? The critic certainly came before the artist in my mind. I bring up these thoughts and questions because last night I wrote in my diary that, for me, it really only takes one person. I only need one person. One person’s belief is enough to get me off my ass. I put no faith in anything, but I expect godly devotion to me in return, but I only need it from one. I wish I could go back in time and fistfight my parents for making me someone who is driven by praise but not before sealing it with a lack of confidence and anxious character. I yearn to disrupt from my subjected state of paralysis. “Drive” is too strong a word, I get along just fine without positive affirmations, but it really does feel great. On my own, I am incredibly unmotivated to create anything and share it. The second person grounds me, they don’t even need to really do anything. Someone to study next to, for instance, someone to sit next to me while I work—even better if they have good ideas and input and interest in what I’m working on. In some instances, it doesn’t really matter who; does that qualify as using people? I just need a body there. I am an empathetic person at the outset, but the more I dwell on these questions that do not even need to be asked, the more I see myself as an opportunist, narcissistically manipulating people to my advantage, means to accomplish my ends. Perhaps, I am giving myself too much credit. To be fair, I have stopped caring a considerable amount about how people perceive me, but I could not bear to be thought as a narcissist. I might have taken it too far. I rarely talk about myself, much preferring to listen and observe, speaking only when spoken to and retreating once more after the interaction, I am quick to cut people off, I have forsaken social media and eradicated most traces of a digital footprint, for the longest time, I carried myself purposefully in a way that I would be as invisible to an Other as possible, becoming illusory and nondescript. When I set out to do things, I do them. When my parents became merely roommates, I vowed to become that invisible to everyone else. I don’t know, I’m trying to be my own therapist, but even if I come to the most correct conclusions, the catharsis will never be the same as a real session. I need another person. And so, yet, I think I may have finally shed the last bit of that modernist air of superiority, as if I unconsciously treated myself as if to have existed independent of all systems. I think most people are like that. You see, narcissism is the medium after all, I didn’t want to wholly accept it, but Krauss is right. I concede her that, but I throw back, an equally simple question to her own simple, brilliant thesis: “Who cares?” “Okay, so what?” It is interesting that I have such a love for video coupled with a crippling phobia of narcissism. I don’t know what that means and I’m too tired to work that out right now. I told myself I would stop doing this shit where I wallow in my guilt and all my ugliness, because it really is as simple as consciously choosing to no longer think in that space. I’m tired of whining to no one. Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a rockstar. I can recall one specific gray memory of childhood. It’s a couple days before my seventh, maybe eighth, birthday. My mother gifts me a necklace with a pendant that I wear currently on a new chain. It is after my parent’s separation/divorce, so maybe it is my eighth birthday. That would make it 2009. Or maybe it’s before, but my father just isn’t home. The details are not important nor the images, but the thought. I don’t know what prompted the daydream after that moment, but I imagined myself singing in front of an arena of adoring fans. (I probably was watching too much American Idol.) A wannabe object infatuated with objects. Why fight it? It’s exhausting and boring. Video is my narcissism and my foxhole—I need mediation between me and the outside. I hide behind my long hair, but not today. I will reappear only to disappear too soon, both aesthetic projects, orchestrations in their own right.

  • Breadstick Sociology

There is a rule at work that you have to ask a manager before you eat a breadstick. It’s a stupid fucking rule, because no one who is hungry and on the clock is gonna go track down an authority figure to eat some greasy, oversalted bread. So, no one actually asks, obviously. However, if a manager or restaurant professional does happen to see you eating one, it’s always, “did you ask to get that?” The kneejerk reaction is to lie and end it there, but you might jokingly admit that you, in fact, did not. “You know you’re supposed to ask.” Everyone knows that, but no one, especially not management, actually cares. The thing that strikes me as ridiculous is that they know no one is gonna ask to eat fucking bread, especially when we’ve been rushing around nonstop for hours and finally have a chance to take a 30-second break to eat the only available food—then back to work before anyone notices. That’s the way it goes. Even though you know nothing will actually happen if you’re caught, you cannot help but eat one only when you know no managers are around, and when you don’t know for certain where they are, you go hide in the piss-poor excuse for a “breakroom” (dry storage) that doesn’t even have any chairs or tables. Eat if you will, but it won’t be a break.

And one might think, “oh, they’re enforcing dumb policies to hold even more power over their workers,” and yeah, sure, but it’s more complicated than that, because this unwritten rule is not ridiculous at all from their perspective. They know with absolute certainty that this one rule will be broken: that is quite literally what it was designed for. This one little asinine mode of control is the only one constantly harped on precisely for this reason. You are allowed to break this nominal rule, so long as you obey all the other big ones: report all your tips accurately, card all guests who order alcohol, don’t commit “time theft,” and so on. This one rule sets the entire tone for the workplace dynamic. An uneasy, steady alliance of we-know-what-you’re-doing and you-know-what-we’re-doing. A delicate balance atop a straight razor. Eat the bread without asking, but don’t organize, don’t steal, don’t demand what’s owed you. You wouldn’t dare.

I should go across the street and work at Red Lobster instead, they got way better bread anyway.
